3 Lunchbox Ideas for World Chocolate Day (That Kids Will Actually Eat)

It's school holidays, it's World Chocolate Day, and there's a pretty good chance someone in your house has already asked for chocolate at least twice today.

We figured, why fight it?

These three recipes give you a reason to say yes. They're warm-friendly, they pack beautifully, and they travel well in the Food Jar or Bento Lunch Box. Best of all, there won't be a single complaint at lunchtime.

Here are our three favourites.

Recipe 01: Chocolate Overnight Oats

Prep it the night before, warm it in the morning, and it'll still be cosy by lunchtime in the Food Jar. It genuinely counts as something nutritious, and the kids will be asking for it again tomorrow.

Prep Time: 5 mins Chill Time: Overnight Serves: 1 Best Packed In: Food Jar

Ingredients

  • ½ cup rolled oats

  • 1 tbsp cacao powder

  • ¾ cup milk of choice

  • 1 tsp chia seeds

  • 1 tsp maple syrup or honey

  • ½ banana, sliced

  • Pinch of salt

Method

  1. Combine oats, cacao, chia seeds, salt and milk in a jar or container. Stir well.

  2. Add maple syrup or honey and stir again. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

  3. In the morning, warm in the microwave for 60 to 90 seconds, stirring halfway. Or heat gently in a small saucepan.

  4. Preheat your Food Jar with boiling water for 1 minute, then tip out.

  5. Pour in the warm oats, top with banana slices and an extra drizzle of honey.

  6. Seal the Food Jar and pack. It'll stay warm for hours.

Montii Tip: Preheating your Food Jar with boiling water for a minute before adding the oats extends how long the heat lasts, so lunch is still warm at pickup.

Recipe 02: Chocolate Bliss Balls

Roll, chill, pack. Add some fruit and crackers alongside and you've got a bento that looks like you spent the morning on it. You didn't. The bliss balls take 15 minutes and the rest is just opening the fridge.

Prep Time: 15 mins Chill Time: 30 mins Serves: 12 balls Best Packed In: Bento Lunch Box

Ingredients

  • 1 cup medjool dates, pitted

  • 3 tbsp cacao powder

  • 1 cup rolled oats

  • 2 tbsp sunflower seed butter or tahini

  • 2 tbsp desiccated coconut, plus extra for rolling

  • Pinch of salt

  • 1 to 2 tbsp water, if needed

Method

  1. Add dates to a food processor and blitz until a rough paste forms.

  2. Add oats, cacao, sunflower seed butter or tahini, coconut and salt. Blitz until combined. Add water 1 tbsp at a time if the mixture is too dry.

  3. Roll into balls, roughly 1 tbsp each, and coat in extra desiccated coconut.

  4. Refrigerate for 30 minutes to firm up.

  5. Pack 2 to 3 balls in the lunchbox alongside fruit, crackers and a small dip container.

Montii Tip: Make a double batch on Sunday and keep them in the fridge all week. They last 5 to 7 days and double as an after-school snack too.

Recipe 03: Mexican Chocolate Mince

This one has a secret ingredient. A single square of dark chocolate deepens the flavour of a classic Mexican-spiced mince into something that tastes like you spent hours on it. Packed hot in the Food Jar, it's warming, filling, and genuinely impressive. The secret stays secret.

Prep Time: 5 mins Cook Time: 20 mins Serves: 4 Best Packed In: Food Jar

Ingredients

  • 500g beef mince

  • 1 can crushed tomatoes (400g)

  • 1 can kidney beans, drained

  • 1 small brown onion, diced

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

  • 1 tsp ground cumin

  • 1 tsp smoked paprika

  • ½ tsp dried oregano

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • 1 square dark chocolate (70%+)

  • Olive oil, for cooking

Method

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add onion and cook for 3 minutes until softened.

  2. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute.

  3. Add mince and cook, breaking it up, until browned all over.

  4. Add cumin, paprika and oregano. Stir and cook for 1 minute.

  5. Pour in crushed tomatoes and kidney beans. Stir to combine. Season with salt and pepper.

  6. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 to 12 minutes until thickened.

  7. Remove from heat. Add the dark chocolate square and stir until melted. Taste and adjust seasoning.

  8. Preheat the Food Jar with boiling water for 1 minute. Tip out, fill with hot mince, and seal immediately.

Montii Tip: The dark chocolate adds depth and a subtle richness without any sweetness. One square is all it takes, and no one will be able to tell what it is. Serve over rice or with crackers.

Make It a Holiday Win

None of these take much more than 20 minutes, and two of the three can be made ahead so lunch is basically sorted before the day even starts. Pack them in the Food Jar to keep things warm, or in the Bento Lunch Box for grab-and-go snacking.

Chocolate for lunch, on a school day, with everyone's blessing. We'll take that win.
