How to Clean Your Drink Bottle Properly (and How Often You Should)

You know the one. The drink bottle that rolled under the car seat on the last day of term, or the one that came home from the sports carnival half full and sat in the school bag all weekend. You unscrew the lid and, well, you can probably guess the rest.
It happens in every house. The good news? Keeping a drink bottle fresh is mostly about a few easy habits, not a big weekly scrub. Once you know where the gunk likes to hide, it only takes a couple of minutes a day.
Here’s exactly how to clean your drink bottle properly, how often to do it, and when it’s time to swap out a part.
Why a Quick Rinse Isn’t Quite Enough
A bottle can look clean and still need a proper wash. Every sip leaves a little behind on the mouthpiece and inside the straw, and the lid traps moisture in all its little nooks. Add a warm school bag and a few hours, and that’s the perfect spot for build-up to start.
The base is rarely the problem. It’s the lid, straw and silicone seal that need the most love, especially if the bottle has held anything other than water, like milk, smoothies, juice or cordial.
How Often Should You Clean Your Drink Bottle?
Here’s a simple rhythm that works for most families:
- Every day: Wash the bottle, lid and straw after each use. The easiest time is during the after-school unpack, so nothing sits overnight.
- Same day, no exceptions: If the bottle held milk, a smoothie, juice or a sports drink, give it a wash as soon as it comes home.
- Once a week: Do a deeper clean. Take the lid apart, remove the silicone seal and brush out the straw.
- Every term: Check the seal and straw for wear. If anything looks stretched, cracked or chewed, it’s time for a replacement part.
How to Clean Your Drink Bottle Day to Day
1. Empty it and take it apart
Tip out any leftover water, unscrew the lid and pull out the straw. Washing everything separately is the single biggest difference between a fresh bottle and a funky one.
2. Pop it in the dishwasher
Most of the time, this is all you need. Every MontiiCo drink bottle is dishwasher safe, because we know you don’t have time for handwashing. Our Fusion lids, straws and straps go on the top shelf, and our stainless steel bases are dishwasher safe up to 70°C. For exact care details on your bottle, check the “Nitty Gritty” tab on the product page.
3. Or wash by hand
Prefer to hand wash? Hot soapy water and a gentle bottle brush will do the job. Give the inside of the base a good swirl, then focus on the mouthpiece and lid threads where drips tend to collect.
4. Let everything dry completely
This step is the one that gets skipped most, and it makes the biggest difference. Leave the bottle, lid and straw to air dry fully before putting them away.

Montii Tip: Store your bottle with the lid off. Popping the lid back on a damp bottle traps moisture inside, which is usually where that musty smell comes from. Lid off, fully dry, then into the cupboard. |
The Weekly Deep Clean: Lid, Straw and Seal
Once a week, give the parts that work the hardest a little extra attention. It takes about five minutes.
Remove the silicone seal
Our Fusion lids have a removable silicone seal inside for easy cleaning. Gently ease it out with your fingertips (skip anything sharp so you don’t nick it), wash it in warm soapy water, and let it dry. When you pop it back in, make sure it sits flat and snug all the way around. A seal that isn’t seated properly is one of the most common reasons a bottle starts to leak.
Brush out the straw
Straws are tricky to clean with a sponge, so a skinny brush is your best friend here. Our Flexi Straw Cleaner Brush bends to reach right through the straw and into the mouthpiece. Run it through under warm soapy water, then rinse well.
Give it a refresh with bicarb soda
If a bottle has been forgotten for a few days, some families like to use bicarb soda for a deeper clean. Sprinkle a little into the base with some warm water, give it a scrub with a bottle brush, then rinse thoroughly. If you’re washing your bottle regularly, you shouldn’t need to do this often.
|
Montii Tip: Keep a Flexi Straw Cleaner Brush in the cutlery drawer so it’s always within reach. When it’s right there next to the sink, the weekly deep clean actually happens. |
What to Avoid When Cleaning Your Bottle
A few small things will help your bottle look good and work properly for longer:
- Skip the freezer. Our insulated bottles aren’t designed to go in the freezer, and they don’t need to. Double wall insulation already keeps drinks cold.
- Keep it out of the microwave. Stainless steel and microwaves don’t mix.
- Go easy on the outside. Abrasive scourers and steel wool can scratch the painted finish. A soft cloth or sponge is all the outside needs.
- Don’t put the lid back on while damp. Always let everything dry first.
When to Replace a Part (Not the Whole Bottle)
Even with great care, seals and straws are the parts that get the most wear, especially with little ones who like a good chew. Here are the signs it’s time for a swap:
- The silicone seal looks stretched, cracked or won’t sit flat
- The straw is chewed, split or discoloured
- The bottle has started leaking when the lid is closed
- A smell hangs around even after a proper clean
-
The good news is you don’t need to buy a whole new bottle.
Make It Part of the After-School Routine
The easiest way to keep on top of it? Hand the first step to the kids. Make it part of the unpack when they walk in the door: lunch box out, drink bottle out, lid off, straw out, everything next to the sink.
It’s a small job that helps them feel independent, and it means you’re not discovering a mystery bottle at the bottom of the bag on Sunday night.
Fresh Bottle, Fewer Steps
A clean drink bottle doesn’t need to be a big job. A daily wash, a quick weekly deep clean, and letting everything dry properly will keep it fresh, leak-free and ready for every school day.
And here’s the part we love most: you don’t have to do any of it by hand. Every MontiiCo product is dishwasher safe, because we know you’ve got enough on your plate. That goes for your drink bottles, plus our Chill Tumblers, Coffee Cups, Lunch Boxes and Food Jars too.
So pull everything apart, load it in with the dinner dishes, and let the dishwasher take care of the rest. One less job on the list tonight.
