10 Family Card Games That Made Our Dinner Table So Much More Fun
If there's one parenting tip I recommend to almost every family, it's this:
KEEP A DECK OF CARDS ON YOUR DINNER TABLE
Not because I want my kids distracted from eating...
Because I want them to want to stay at the table.
When the focus shifts from "Eat your dinner!" to "Whose turn is it?", something really lovely happens.
The kids stay longer, there's less pressure around food, and somehow the best conversations happen naturally.
We've been doing this for years, and these are the games that get pulled out over and over again in our house.
1️⃣ Monopoly Deal
Best for ages 6+
If your family loves Monopoly but not the three-hour commitment, this is for you. It's fast, competitive and has just enough strategy to keep older kids and adults interested. This is probably our most-played card game.

2️⃣ UNO (Flip is our favourite!)
Best for ages 7+
You can't go wrong with UNO. There are so many versions now, but UNO Flip is definitely our favourite. Just when you think you're about to win, someone flips the deck and the whole game changes. Expect plenty of laughs (and a few dramatic meltdowns!).

3️⃣ Rummy
Best for ages 5+
All you need: A standard deck of cards (or two for a bigger group).
One of those classic games that never gets old. It's easy enough for kids to learn but still fun for adults, making it perfect for family dinners.

4️⃣ Speed
Best for ages 5+
This game is FAST. Blink and it's over.
We usually turn it into a family championship. Two people play, the winner stays on to challenge the next person. Before long everyone is cheering, laughing and desperate for their turn.
All you need is a standard deck of cards. Easiest with two players.

5️⃣ Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza
Best for ages 4+
This game is absolute chaos... in the best possible way.
It's loud, hilarious and perfect when you've got grandparents, cousins and friends all around the table. The younger kids usually end up beating the adults, which somehow makes it even better.
This is always the game we pull out when we've got the extended family over.

6️⃣ Flip 7
Best for ages 7+
If your family likes taking risks, you'll love this one.
The whole game is about deciding whether to stop while you're ahead... or risk drawing one more card.
I'm definitely not a risk taker, which is probably why I never win 😂

7️⃣ Rock, Scissors, Paper
Best for ages 3+
The Duellerz pack is such a clever twist on the classic game everyone already knows.
It's quick to learn, fast to play and doesn't require loads of concentration, making it a great option for family dinners.

8️⃣ Spot It!
Best for ages 3+
This one is more about observation than taking turns, so it can be a little tricky to play while everyone is eating.
We actually love pulling it out while dinner is being served or just before we sit down. It's a great way to settle everyone and get them gathered around the table.
There are heaps of different versions, so I'd recommend picking a theme your kids already love. We have the Bluey Spot It! and it's definitely our favourite.

9️⃣ Mantis
Best for ages 6+
Don't let the simple rules fool you.
This game is surprisingly strategic, incredibly addictive and always ends with someone dramatically stealing everyone else's cards.
You'll need a little bit of table space, but it's absolutely worth it.

🔟 Palace (also known as... Shithead 🤫 ...but maybe don't tell the kids that!)
Best for ages 7+
Another brilliant game you can play with nothing more than a standard deck of cards.
It takes a round or two to get the hang of it, but once everyone knows the rules, it's one of those games you'll keep coming back to. We've played this one as a family for years and it never gets old.

⭐️ A Few Tips From Our Family ⭐️
💡Don't worry if your kids don't know all the rules straight away.
We usually simplify games for the younger ones and introduce more rules as they get older.
💡 Games where you take turns tend to work best during dinner.
Fast-paced games like Spot It! are perfect before everyone sits down to eat.
💡 Keep a deck of cards in the middle of the table all the time.
When dinner becomes about spending time together instead of just eating, you'll be amazed how much longer everyone sticks around.

⭐️ Why We Love Playing Cards at Dinner ⭐️
For us, this isn't really about the games...
It's about creating a reason for everyone to stay at the table just a little longer.
➡️ Less pressure to eat.
➡️ Less nagging to sit still.
➡️ More laughter.
➡️ More conversations.
➡️ More connection.
And honestly, I don't think my boys will remember what we had for dinner on a random Tuesday night...
But I really hope they remember laughing around the table together ❤️
I'd love to add to this list! If your family has a favourite card game, let me know in the comments. I'm always looking for new ones to try. 🃏
